NYT: City’s Unemployment Surpasses National Rate

(President between Smith and Court, 8:28 A.M.)

The New York Times:

New York City’s unemployment rate rose to 9.6 percent last month, surpassing the national unemployment rate for the first time since the recession began, the State Labor Department said on Thursday.

The number of unemployed New Yorkers rose to 402,200...

James Brown, an analyst for the department, said the latest data indicate that the recession could take longer to run its course in the city. “Although the national economy is showing some signs of bottoming out, the outlook for the city’s economy remains weak into 2010,” Mr. Brown said.
